Hello all, i thought id teach myself Allen Bradley, ive got a MicroLogix 1000 PLC and a RS232 comms lead. I have a Windows 7 Laptop with USB ports and Ethernet.

Ive decided i want to make a training scheme for other Engineers on AB prgramming. So i plan on teaching myself and then others. Make a test rig with a complete teach yourself tutorial guide. My problem is i have no serial output on my laptop so i cant communicate.

I dont have PCMIA slot either. Ive been looking into USB to Serial converters but there seems to a lot of issues related with them. Have any of you ever used such USB - RS232 adapter and successfully communicated with the PLC.

The biggest trouble I see people run into isn't installing their USB to serial adapter, but figuring out what com port it was assigned to.
