Csr Bluesuite Download
The CSR8645 is a Bluetooth 4.1 stereo audio chip supporting the aptX codec for streaming high quality audio. I bought the chip from ebay but I couldn’t find a breakout board for it, so I built one. Configuring the chip The chip can be configured through the SPI interface with an USB-SPI device connected to the computer. For this you have to do the following steps: 1. Get a breakout module with the FT232RL USB-UART converter chip where you can access every pin of the FT232RL.
Download and run Zadig from. In Options menu choose “List all devices”, choose your FT232RL device, choose libusbK driver and press “Replace driver”.
This will install a generic libusb-compatible driver for the chip. Connect the CSR8645 with the FT232RL. The has a good explanation how to connect them.
To select the SPI pins logic level to 3.3V for the FT232RL connect the VCCIO pin to the 3V3OUT pin. But because the CSR8645 needs 1.8V logic for its SPI pins you need to add resistors in series or a logic converter when you connect the two devices. (According to the datasheet you can connect the 1V8 pin of the CSR8645 to the VCCIO pin to provide the 1.8V logic level for the SPI pins, but only if the two devices share the same power source. In this case you don’t need a logic converter).
To enable the SPI communication for the CSR8645 connect the SPIPCM pin to a high logic level through a resistor. CSR8645 SPI connection 3. Install the BlueSuite from and the CSR86XX ROM Config tool from 4. Replace the usbspi.dll in the installed programs with a custom dll from. Open the ROM Config tool or the PSTools from the BlueSuite installation directory and change the settings of the CSR8645. Before you do any changes it is a good idea to save the original settings (PSkeys) and the eeprom content. You can do this with the PSTools (File-Dump/File-Merge to backup/update the PSkeys) or by running the following commands from the BueSuite directory.
Backup the PSkeys into pskeys.psr: pscli.exe dump pskeys.psr. Merge some settings from pskeys.psr to the chip: pscli.exe merge pskeys.psr.
Backup the whole EEPROM content to a file: e2cmd.exe dump eeprom.hex. Restore EEPROM contents from a backup file: e2cmd.exe download eeprom.hex (I had to add the.doc extension to upload the files).
PSTools The ROM Config tool is more user friendly and has more settings than the PSTools. But according to some info from different forums this program shouldn’t be used to write directly to the device (‘Write Device’ button), because it will overwrite some data on the device, or it just writes only a subset of the data, and so it can brick your module. Instead you should write to a file, before and after changing the settings, and then compare the two files and copy the changed keys to the original dump file. Then you can write back the changed dump file using the methods mentioned above. Audio output The CSR8645 has a differential audio output which means that there is two output for each channel (LP+LN and RP+RN). If you want to connect this output to an amplifier you have to transform the differential output to a single ended output, because most of the amplifiers have one input for each channel and a common ground (L+R). Here is the schematic which I built to do the conversion, it is based on LME49721.
Hi, Article very succinct and useful, missing only one important notice. Using the CSRXXROMConfigTool almost certainly lead to overwrite the boot sector, and thereby to lock the module (write to device buton). So it was in my case (F-3188 module), and several others, which you can read on the diyaudio forum. A safe way to configure the module with CSR86xx chip is using the PS Tools (but PS Tool has very small number of options to configure ).
You can try to copy PS keys from ROMConfigTool for PS Tools and load the new configuration by using the “merge” in PS Tools. For some it works, but I do not want to believe that there is no simplest way to configure this chip. If anyone knows how to unlock the module locked by the ROMConfigTool, please give me any tips. Also, if someone comes up with a simple way to configure the system, let them share knowledge. Nice post, it is really helpfull. I have a question if you can help me: Are you using separated power supplies for the bluetooth module and the differential to single ended stage? Since you mentioned in one of the responses that the v-bat and power-enable is connected to the VDD, is this VDD the same connected to the lme49721?
Im getting a horrible ‘digital’ noise while using the same supply for the bt module and op-amp stage, and it seems to be a ground loop isolation issue that seems common on bluetooth modules. Of course if i use separated batteries this goes away, already answering myself, but wanted to know your thoughts on this or what you did. Hello boiso83, I’m looking at the CSR8645 Product Brief, which says it has a dual-mode Bluetooth radio, and aptX audio technology. The diagrams show various digital inputs & outputs, as well. The thing that isn’t clear, is: 1.) Can it operate as a Bluetooth aptX Transmitter – using audio streamed to one of the digital inputs? 2.) Can it operate as a Bluetooth aptX Receiver – with the audio being streamed to one of the digital outputs (for an external DAC), or is the audio only output as an analog signal?
Thanks, David Baldock. Thanks for your quick reply. Just so I’m clear about how the CSR8645 can work – The datasheet says that in Transmit mode, it isn’t capable of Bluetooth aptX?
And, in Transmit mode, it can only use analog input signals to send via Bluetooth?. I was hoping it could be used in a DAP – to read digital music from USB or a uSD card, and transmit Bluetooth aptX to headphones / speakers / car stereos, etc.; or to receive & decode Bluetooth aptX signals, to drive the DAP’s amplifier, which will power wired headphones. Thanks again, David Baldock. Yeah, I managed to connect to the board with PSTool. Made a dump and saved the Eeprom 😉 But I’m not able to read the chip with CSR86xx ROM Config toolIt does recognise the right platform though But when I load the saved dump file with the CSR86xx ROM Config tool, I’m able to look around in the settings. Normally, when a password is given by the manufacturer, most of the time it’s four zeros (0000).

So I looked at all the parameters step by step that have a setting looking like four zeros and changed them one by one. No luck so far 😦 I think it has to be possible, we don’t want our our neighbours to connect with our Bluetooth, do we?;-)) I also looked for a setting where a password or pin could be enabled, nope Here are some settings I changed to test: – Module Design ID – Module Security Code – Allow use of unit key – Enable configuration security – PSkeyfixedPIN The last one looked the most promising to me but doesn’t work either. To me it looks like PIN or Password has to be enabled first.

Firmware Update Instructions Prior to upgrading you will need a USB Data cable to transfer data from you PC USB port to the USB port on the back of the Bluetooth speaker. The USB power cable that came with your Bluetooth speaker will not work for this because it is only a USB power cable. This update tool only works on computers running Windows 7 32 bit OS.
